When is a cat considered overweight?

Cats in the Netherlands are increasingly struggling with excess weight, also known as overweight, or in more serious cases, obesity. As your cat ages, it’s energy requirements decrease. Spaying and neutering also reduce energy requirements. The physical fitness of an adult cat largely determines its quality of life. Physical fitness primarily depends on food intake and exercise levels.

Ideal fitness contributes to a long and healthy life. If you think your cat is overweight, it is best to consult your veterinarian. Symptoms of overweight may have underlying causes, such as hormonal imbalances. Many people find it difficult to assess their own cat’s physical fitness. Ask your veterinarian or veterinary assistant to check your cat’s fitness level.

Diet

If your cat is diagnosed with overweight or tends to become overweight, a special diet can help it achieve and maintain its ideal weight.
