Your pet’s skin and coat are exposed to different influences throughout the year. Due to variations in humidity, temperature and shedding periods, your pet’s skin and coat may not always be in optimal condition. If the problem persists, consult your veterinarian. Give your dog regular flea and worm treatments. These parasites can also affect the skin and coat. Your pet may also have an allergy. Do not bathe your dog too often, and use a special shampoo that prevents irritation. If your pet suffers from hypersensitivity reactions, SANIMED Skin/Sensitive for dogs or SANIMED Skin/Sensitive for cats may provide relief. When you take your new puppy home, bear in mind that this is a major change for the puppy. The puppy is taken away from its mother and siblings, enters a new environment and often has to travel in a car. All of these new experiences can cause stress, which in turn may affect digestion. That’s why it’s important to give your puppy the same food for the first few days. After a few days, you can switch to another food. Always switch food gradually by mixing the old with the new for several days. Use the transition table below to gradually make the switch.  

Pet food stays fresh longest when stored in a cool, dry, dark place. You can also keep pet food fresh longer by always keeping a week’s worth of food in a separate container. That way, you only need to open the larger package once a week. This avoids frequently exposing the food to oxygen, which makes it go bad faster. If you do use a separate food container, be sure to clean it properly before refilling it.

Feeding schedules are guidelines that are generally adequate for the average dog or cat. Individual animals have different needs and activity levels. So keep a close eye on your pet’s weight, and adjust the feeding ration as needed  

Make sure your dog gets enough exercise, for example by going on regular walks. Invite your dog to play. This will improve its mood and prevent excess weight gain. Pregnancy lasts about 63 days in dogs. Your dog’s nutritional needs will start increasing from around the 5th week (35 days) of pregnancy. 25% of fetal development takes place in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy. This means the other 75% of development takes place in weeks 6 through 9. In other words, your dog's nutritional needs are highest in the last trimester. The best way to meet your dog’s increased nutritional needs is to provide her with a specially formulated food starting from the 5th or 6th week. Once the puppies are born, the nursing period begins. This lactation period is highly demanding on your dog. She needs a lot of extra food to maintain milk production. Feline pregnancy lasts 9 weeks on average. Your cat needs more food than normal during this time. To produce enough milk for her kittens, a mother cat needs increased quantities of food. Your mother cats needs the most food when the kittens are 2 to 3 weeks old, because that is when she is producing the most milk. • Proteins are made up of smaller units called “amino acids”. Dogs and cats can produce some amino acids themselves.   A lack of essential fatty acids may result in skin and coat disorders and reproductive problems. Excess fat gets stored in the body and may result in your pet becoming overweight.

Carbohydrates are an important source of energy for your dog or cat. Dog and cat foods contain digestible carbohydrates and indigestible carbohydrates. Digestible carbohydrates are starches and sugars that the body can absorb and use as energy. Indigestible carbohydrates are dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is needed for proper intestinal function.

Essential amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) are amino acids that cannot be made from other amino acids, which means they must be obtained from food.

Your pet’s body is made up mostly of water. A loss of 15% of their bodily fluids can be fatal. A healthy dog or cat normally needs around 50 ml of water per kg of body weight per day (= approx. 1.5 tablespoons per pound).

When we give our pets a 'varied' diet, we are anthropomorphizing, to use a fancy word, This means we, as humans, incorrectly assume that other animals must be just like us. We’d get tired of eating the same thing every day, so must cats. Nothing could be further from the truth however. In fact, it’s important for cats to eat the same thing every day. Their gastrointestinal systems become attuned to a particular food. Switching foods abruptly may even cause diarrhea. Therefore, when switching foods, we recommend gradually mixing more and more new food into the old food over a couple of days. If you feed your cat SANIMED Anti-Struvite, SANIMED Renal, SANIMED Skin/Sensitive or SANIMED Weight Reduction, you can also give your cat a single-serving pouch of wet food from the same product line. For each of these products, we offer a wet food that is fully interchangeable or great in combination with the equivalent dry food.

Kittens up to 12 weeks can digest milk from their mothers. This milk contains far less lactose (milk sugar) than cow’s milk. After 12 weeks, most cats lose the ability to digest the lactose in milk. If your cat is suffering from lactose intolerance, it will show symptoms of diarrhea or flatulence. Adult cats do not need milk as a nutrient, so it’s best not to provide it.

When we give our dog a 'varied' diet, we are anthropomorphizing, to use a fancy word meaning to give it human characteristics, But a dog's gut flora is far more specialized and less abundant than ours. Their gut flora is accustomed to processing a specific kind of food. Abrupt changes in diet can disrupt this gut flora. As a result, your dog may not fully digest and absorb new food at first. An abrupt change in diet may even cause diarrhea. So when switching food, we recommend mixing increasing amounts of the new food into the old food over several days. This lets your dog get used to the new food gradually. Use the transition table below to gradually make the switch.

Depending on the size of your dog, it often helps large dogs to put the food dish up on a stand. To further slow your dog’s greedy eating, you can put something (upside-down saucer or a large, rounded stone) in the food dish (make sure your dog cannot hurt himself). Special “slow feeder” bowls are also available.

Coprophagia, or the eating of feces, can have several different causes. It is extremely difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of this unwanted behavior. Causes may include:

• Boredom;
• Attention seeking;
• Exploration;
• Feces that taste good;
• Poor hygiene;
• Acquired habits;
• Mimicking the mother, who often eats the feces of her puppies before they are weaned, to keep the nest clean.

  So the causes can vary widely. A nutritional deficiency is almost never the cause, provided, of course, that your dog receives a well-balanced dog food and does not exhibit any gastrointestinal problems.  

There may be many different causes for your dog refusing to eat. In most cases, it’s nothing to be concerned about. Dogs can easily go a day without eating. (A cat, on the other hand, would find this difficult!) But they may not necessarily want to!) Tips to improve your dog’s appetite: Feed your dog at set times. This is better than providing unlimited access to food. Feed your dog after you and your family have eaten. A dog should be able to eat in peace and quiet. Put the food in a quiet place and leave your dog alone when it is eating. Do not give your dog snacks. These are often particularly tasty, and your dog may come to prefer them and start refusing normal meals. Tips to improve food intake: Add warm water to dry food. Mix well, then wait a few minutes before giving it to your dog. You can also heat the dry food up in the microwave for a few seconds. The heat will release more odor from the kibble. You can also place a small bowl of water in the microwave with the food . If your dog will not eat the food, remove the food dish after 20 minutes and offer it again some 3 hours later.

Dogs with diabetes typically require insulin daily. Provide the same amount and type of food at regular times. Irregular feeding makes it difficult to stabilize your dog with insulin. SANIMED Weight Control for dogs helps control blood sugar levels. Consult your veterinarian if it is difficult to stabilize your dog’s blood sugar level, or if your dog has weight problems.

Dogs lose fluids throughout the day. Not only through urine and feces, but also by sweating through their paw pads and by panting. We cannot stress this enough: Make sure your dog has access to fresh water at all times! Dogs are dependent on us for access to water. If a dog goes 48 hours without access to water, this can cause irreversible harm. It is therefore critical to provide clean drinking water every day.

Visit your veterinarian once a year for the required vaccinations and a checkup. If you have concerns about your dog’s health, always consult your veterinarian. Never put it off for too long.

The flea reproductive cycle lasts all year long. So be sure to treat your dog for fleas throughout the year. To prevent fleas and ticks, convenient sprays and drops, which you can administer monthly, are available.

When your dog is a puppy, you should deworm it regularly. Deworming is recommended at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks and 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 12 months. For adult dogs, deworming is recommended once every 3 months, i.e. 4 times a year.

Because cats and dogs each have their own unique nutritional needs, they each need food specially formulated for them. Feeding your dog the wrong food may result in health problems.

Is your dog overweight? If so, it is best to switch to a food that has fewer calories than a maintenance food. But just switching food is often not enough. You should also consider cutting out snacks and getting more exercise. When it comes to exercise, be sure to consider your dog’s physical condition. If your dog is more than 15% overweight, contact your veterinarian. SANIMED Weight Reduction is a suitable food with reduced calories. Feed your dog according to the nutritional needs for its target body weight. If possible, spread the food out over multiple smaller portions throughout the day. A black coat may turn brown or red from the sun, during shedding periods or due to the use of products that may affect your dog’s coat, such as certain shampoos. Each hair cycles through a growth phase, a transition phase, a resting phase and a maturation phase. During the maturation phase, just before it falls out, the hair may turn slightly more red. Shedding periods are regulated by changes in the length of the day or in temperature, which are both monitored by the brain (pineal gland). Sunlight often changes the color of the tips of the hair. Moisture can increase the effects of UV light. Especially when combined with saliva, sunlight can have a major impact on fur color. There is also a slight chance that hair discoloration is due to a lack of certain nutrients, but the chance of this is relatively small when using commercially available foods. A deficiency of zinc and copper can bring about a change in fur color. It will also causes a change in hair texture. A lack of the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine may also cause brown/red discoloration of black fur. Pet foods that contain adequate copper, zinc, phenylalanine and tyrosine will ensure the proper color intensity of your black dog’s coat. However, there are no indications that higher levels of these nutrients will make the coat extra black. Red discoloration on light coats may be caused by licking, moisture, medication and/or cosmetics (such as shampoo). This is usually a localized red (rust-colored) discoloration on white fur due to chronic licking at the toes. This discoloration may be caused by hypersensitivity to certain foods or environmental factors. This is similar to what happens in animals with tear stains. Diet does not play a role in this.

Cats are not omnivores. They are picky eaters with high standards for their food. The actual flavor is not the main factor that determines whether your cat likes a particular kind of food. In fact, your cat meticulously assesses how attractive its food is, based on:

• Smell
• Kibble shape
• Kibble structure
• Kibble size

  A cat considers its food “good” if the overall experience is positive. The food that your cat ends up choosing is a matter of individual preference. With cats, you often need to experiment to find out what they like.

How often you feed your cat depends on its age. An 8-week-old kitten, for example, needs a small amount of dry kitten food, soaked in a small amount of warm water, if preferred, at least threes times a day. The average adult cat (> 1 year) often only needs two meals a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Unlimited access to food can cause excessive weight gain, particularly in indoor cats and in neutered males.
